FIDE Master
A dedicated and passionate chess player with years of competitive experience across classical, rapid, and blitz formats. Currently rated 1891 in standard (FIDE), with consistent performances in national tournaments, including top-5 finishes in major open events such as the Kisumu Classical, and 1st place in the 2025 US Masters Chess League qualifiers—a team player who has captained Nakuru Chess Club for 4 years.
Currently playing for Equity Chess Club, with a Bronze for the team on board four in the 2025 Kenya National Chess League. Adept at both strategic and tactical play, with a balanced performance across diverse opening repertoires. A strong advocate for chess growth in Kenya and actively engaged in developing local chess talent through coaching and tournament participation.
LSI/AIM
LSI/AIM Ian King is one of Kenya’s most popular National Coaches, renown for coaching Kenya’s youngest FIDE Master and National Champion, the current Under-10 Africa Schools Champion and many other top junior players. He has earned multiple titles from the FIDE Chess in Education Commission, including SI, LSI, and SLI-elect, and serves as a FIDE Chess in Education Member.
Matters Classical Chess, he secured a Board Prize in the 2018 Kenya National Premier Chess League and acted as Official Coach for the Junior Team that claimed Gold and Silver at the 2023 Africa Youth Chess Championships. Online, LSI/AIM Ian King is famous for his high calculation speed, tactical sharpness and entertaining TikTok streams (@sataranjiafrica).
He's also well known for being the CEO of Sataranji Africa, Kenya's largest Chess In Schools network. His pedigree is further underscored by training under GM Kenny Solomon and GM Pontus Carlsson as a Chess Masters for Africa Tour Fellow in 2017 an initiative by the Paul Allen Foundation and the Garry Kasparov Foundation.
FIDE Master
Allan Chumba is a Kenyan chess player known for his sharp tactical instincts, competitive resilience, and deep psychological understanding of the game. I have risen through national ranks with a fearless and dynamic style, I have built a reputation as a dangerous opponent capable of shifting momentum and capitalizing on the smallest imbalances. My approach to chess blends calculation, intuition, and psychological pressure, reflecting both disciplined study and natural creative force.
Beyond the board, Allan brings an analytical and structural mindset shaped by his academic background. I graduated from University of Eldoret with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, a field that sharpened my problem-solving ability, precision, and systems thinking qualities that directly influence my chess philosophy. I view positions as interconnected systems, where small forces, correctly applied, can trigger decisive outcomes.
Team Leader
Benard Wanjala brings over 20 years of experience in chess administration, leadership, and strategic development at various levels of the game. His journey reflects a rare blend of sporting passion, institutional leadership, and corporate expertise. His leadership in chess dates back to his university years at Kenyatta University, where he served as Captain of the KU Chess Club in 2006. In 2009, he was elected Student Leader in charge of Sports, further demonstrating his organizational and governance capabilities.
In 2013, he founded the Equity Chess Club, which made an immediate impact by winning the National League in its debut season — a testament to his vision, planning, and team-building skills. On the continental stage, Wanjala served as Vice President of the African Chess Confederation from 2018 to 2022, playing a key role in shaping policy, strengthening federations, and promoting chess development across Africa.
His managerial expertise extends deeply into the corporate world. Having served as Senior Manager in the Microcredit Section at Equity Bank, he gained extensive experience in financial systems, strategic growth, and institutional management.
Today, he is a highly sought-after consultant for microfinance institutions, advising on sustainability, governance, and expansion strategies. His corporate leadership credentials have also seen him appointed as an advisor to the President of FIDE, working alongside former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. Academically, Benard holds a Bachelor of Education and a Master’s degree in Business Administration, equipping him with both pedagogical insight and executive management expertise.
Wanjala has been instrumental in positioning Chess Kenya as a leading federation not only nationally but increasingly within Africa.
Production DGT
Wambugu Wandina is a FIDE Arbiter (FA) and experienced chess administrator from Kenya with extensive expertise in Digital Game Transmission (DGT) and ID Chess operations. He has officiated at major continental and international events, including the 2025 Africa Junior Chess Championship in Cape Verde and the 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championship in Mombasa, serving as a DGT Arbiter. With strong knowledge of FIDE regulations, tournament management systems, rapid reporting, and results verification, he consistently ensures professional, accurate, and efficient chess event execution.
Beyond arbitration, Wandina is an accomplished tournament organizer and governance leader within Chess Kenya. He has served as Chief Arbiter, Deputy Chief Arbiter, and Organizer in numerous national and regional championships, and previously held key committee roles including Secretary to the Constitution Review Committee, National Elections Board, and National Team Selection Committee. His contribution reflects a deep commitment to integrity, transparency, and the growth of chess at both grassroots and elite levels
